Delivery to Seattle – WTF Part I
May 10, 2020As I alluded to in the last post, my delivery adventure definitely became an adventure before very long. Having only limited “yachting” experience previously and all of that as an owner’s guest, I had no idea what it was to be “crew.” New experience #1. The next surprise was to come: we hit weather that wasn’t expected when we made plans to bring the yacht north from San Francisco. Not only was this my first crew experience, but it was also my first open water jaunt. If you haven’t been miles offshore in the actual ocean, you don’t realize how different it is from a simple fishing trip or a little cruise. Speaking of cruises…if that is your experience traveling oceans or other large bodies of water, compared to any kind of megayacht, it’s like the difference between riding in a bus and being on a skateboard.
There was huge excitement as we left the dock and started towards the Golden Gate Bridge. I absolutely adore the Bridge….always have. But, this time I wasn’t on land and I wasn’t on some tour boat that was going to take me back to Fisherman’s Wharf in a couple of hours. I was headed for the “Big Blue” — the Pacific Ocean. Dang…I was so naive…I had no clue what this was going to be like, and boy, did I get a real awakening.
The run up to the bridge is exciting. You see it ahead of you, you get closer and closer. While it’s impressive from the land, you get a completely different perspective from the water. And, you really feel that the bridge is a “gateway” to the Pacific and beyond.
As we head under the bridge, you can hear the wind in my video. There’s some chop, but that’s not unusual in that part of the Bay. We are being influenced by weather and current from the ocean, but ti’s so incredible to be heading “under the bridge.” Even a friend of mine, long-time crew member on this boat is out there taking pictures. Not his first rodeo, but it’s a moment worth documenting.

Since this is going to be a long-ish story, and I don’t want to bore you, how about I continue in the next post? We are happy, we are sunny, I’m on a yachting adventure. What could go wrong? It’s just a multi-day cruise up the coast, right.
Ah…what the ocean teaches us… Stay tuned…
